Make-up and sun protection

How to combine both:

Sun protection factor has already become part of many people's daily summer routine. But how can this be combined with make-up?

Make-up with sun protection factor: is that enough sun protection?

Make-up often has its own sun protection factor (SPF). The skin color in foundations is made up of iron oxide (yellow, red and black) and titanium dioxide (white). These minerals absorb light and UV radiation and offer a certain level of protection. To achieve the stated protection, however, you would need to apply around 1 - 1.5 g to your face, just like with sunscreen. That's around 6-7 times more product than you normally use in make-up. Unfortunately, wearing make-up alone does not offer any significant protection .

In addition, make-up often does not provide broad-spectrum protection . This means that UVA protection is almost non-existent. Sunscreens that have at least 1/3 of the UVA protection provided by the SPF are labeled with the UVA seal in the EU (UVA in a circle). This is usually missing from make-up.

A real alternative could be tinted sun creams or BB creams. These are designed to be used in sufficient quantities. The disadvantage is that the shade range in this product category is often rather limited.

Often the combination of good sun protection plus good foundation works best.

Guide for sunscreen under make-up

What is the best way to combine sunscreen and make-up? Sunscreen is applied as the last step in your morning routine when applying skincare products. Dry skin can use an extra moisturizer beforehand. Oily skin may prefer to go without or just use a serum.

We recommend an SPF of 30 or 50. According to the definition, this extends the time you could safely spend in the sun by 30 or 50 times. Even if you don't necessarily need the theoretical value in everyday life, it compensates somewhat for imperfect application, too little product or wear and tear over the course of the day. The ideal would be to use 1 - 1.5g depending on the size of your face and to reapply every few hours during the day to maintain the declared protection.

It's worth looking for a light sunscreen under makeup for a more pleasant skin feel. Products with alcohol (denat) often have a lighter texture. However, they may not be suitable for very sensitive skin. Korean sunscreens are also often elegantly formulated. The UVA booster contains 3% rice powder. This absorbs shine and creates a slight soft-focus effect, making it ideal as a makeup base.

Once the sunscreen has been applied, it is advisable to wait a few minutes until the film has set before applying make-up. This allows the protection to fully develop. Then apply the make-up using dabbing rather than rubbing movements to leave the sunscreen as intact as possible.

Refresh sun protection without ruining your make-up

In everyday life, for example in the office, it may not be necessary to constantly reapply sunscreen over make-up if you have applied it diligently in the morning. In summer , however, especially at lunchtime and when a few hours have passed since your morning routine, it is advisable to reapply additional sunscreen over make-up outside to avoid sunburn and further skin damage.

There are three popular methods for this:

1. Spray: generously spray sunscreen spray onto the face
2 . Stick: apply a sunscreen stick to your face
3. Beauty Blender: my preferred method - use a makeup sponge to dab your favorite sunscreen over your makeup.

Unfortunately, powder with SPF is not a suitable method, as the amount applied is so small that it does not offer any significant protection. The three methods mentioned are not perfect either. If we are exposed to really strong UV rays on vacation, then perhaps we should forego makeup and apply a lot of sunscreen.

Conclusion

Sun protection and make-up can be combined without compromising your beauty routine. It is important not to rely on make-up with SPF, but to find a sunscreen that you really like and then apply regularly in the morning under your make-up. Have fun trying it out and stay well protected!
